Weatherize your home this winter and save

As winter approaches, bringing with it bone-chilling drafts, follow these five simple, cost-effective steps, you will be more comfortable this season and reduce your utility bills.

Step 1: Beware the draft
A drafty window or doorway can increase your energy bills by 5% to 30%. Use weather stripping in window sills and door jambs where movement and flexibility is necessary. For more permanent leaks, such as around your window or door frame, use caulking.

The most severe draft often comes from the gap under your doorway. Stop-up this drafty gap with a “draft snake.” Roll-up an old towel or bathmat and seal off the most offensive draft in your home for no cost at all.

Step 2: Insulate
Many homeowners believe insulation can only be accomplished during the construction process. Thus, they believe they have no control over insulation in their home. However, insulation doesn’t just go between the walls. The addition of heavy drapes or air-cushion blinds in the winter can both keep the warm air inside and the cold air out. Insulate your water heater and hot water pipes. If your water heater or pipes are warm to the touch, costly energy is radiating away from them and dissipating into thin air.

Step 3: Circulate
Ever wonder what that little switch is on the side of your ceiling fan? Flip the switch when the weather turns cold and your fan will reverse and pull the cooler air up and push the warmer air that has risen to the ceiling to the walls and down into the room.

Step 4: Deduct
Invest in an Energy Star-certified furnace or water heater. Not only will this equipment pay for itself over time due to increased efficiency, but you may also receive a tax credit of up to $1,500 for making a greener choice.

Step 5: Wear a sweater
You may save the most on your energy bill by simply turning down the thermostat and donning a sweater to capture and retain body heat.

You can easily cut your energy bill by up to 30% by taking a little initiative and making a few wise decisions around your home this winter.
